With the Empyrean, PANalytical has set the new standard for a multipurpose diffractometer. In developing the ultimate X-ray platform for the analysis of powders, thin films, nanomaterials and solid objects, the PANalytical R&D team has redesigned all key components of the X-ray diffractometer from the ground up.   It is PANalytical’s answer to the challenges of modern materials research, where the lifetime of a diffractometer is considerably longer than the horizon of any research project.

Praised by scientists for its performance, Empyrean allows them to prepare for synchrotron beam time in the best possible way. The unrivalled collection of sample stages and optical components for Empyrean allows applications to be done in various ways: from ‘simple’ by just adding a few slits and analysis software to a standard geometry, to top performance using dedicated optics, sources and detectors. This is ideal for a multipurpose laboratory: if the need for a certain application increases, data quality and throughput time can be improved by adding dedicated modules.

PIXcel Technology

The only X-ray detector that can be used as a point, line and area detector, the PIXcel3D is available as part of the Empyrean, a high-performance X-ray diffractometer platform. With PIXcel3D, PANalytical has been able to design a multipurpose system that handles measurements on powders, thin films, nanomaterials and solid objects in one instrument, with no compromise in data quality. The features include superior resolution and speed of data collection, extremely high dynamic range, high count rate linearity, and maintenance-free.

PreFIX

PreFIX is PANalytical’s proven proprietary concept that stands for pre-aligned fast interchangeable X-ray modules. Thanks to this PreFIX concept your diffraction system becomes flexible, fast and future proof. The PreFIX mounting method of optics and stages enables the diffractometer to be reconfigured thanks to a reproducible positioning in three dimensions with microns precision. This allows users to switch between different applications in a matter of minutes, making the Empyrean a real multipurpose diffractometer.

Empyrean with its alignment-free PreFIX modules and measurement and analysis automation possibilities supports anyone who has good laboratory practice (GLP) in mind. The standard Empyrean platform with the high resolution theta-theta goniometer is a true multi-purpose research diffractometer. Thanks to the PreFIX concept for optics and stages, users can vary the application of choice in matter of minutes, without the need to realign the system. 

Empyrean Alpha-1 is configured with a unique symmetric Ge monochromator (Johansson type) giving perfect Cu or Co Kα1-only Bragg-Brentano reflection geometry data for structure determination, with unrivaled resolution, excellent peak symmetry, and ultra-low backgrounds. Thanks to the PreFIX concept on the tube housing, users can easily swap between Kα1-only configuration to Kα1,2 in a matter of minutes.

Empyrean X-ray diffractometer is a versatile platform for non-destructive materials investigation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scattering give insight into lattice parameters, crystallographic structures, oxidation stages, and particle size. 

Empyrean XRD also has extensive in-operando capabilities to investigate the changes occurring in cathode and anode materials as the cell is charged
and discharged. Flexibility in X-ray source, optics, and detectors make the Empyrean able to investigate a wide range of battery cells.
